Reliable VW Electrics?

I always thought Volkswagons had crappy electrical systems?  How about a Lucas instead?

    I never had any problems with my old '71 Bug's or my '73 Thing's electrics. The generators last forever. My '71 had 250,000 miles on it, and only changed the brushes once.
