I run a magneto on about everything. But, this latest one on the panhead has been a SOB. It will spark on the bench, but - not in the motor. I think the points have some kind of coating on them that's not allowing them to ground properly. So, out comes the Delco Points File. Somethin's gotta give or I'm sayin' fuck it and goin' fer a timer and coil . . . and battery . . . and a switch . . . yuk !

ReplyDeleteNoot, having never had anything to do with them, apart from a one guy who had fitted a Joe Hunt to an old Trumpy chop back in the day and was constantly giving trouble, have they always been a reliable system or have the last twenty odd years seen an improvement in quality and consistency of operation and are they worth the mods required on a '74 shovel? Any info greatly appreciated, cheers mate.

ReplyDeleteYes I have to agree I will take my points, condenser and 25 dollar battery all day long then deal with the left arm of the black wizard. Batteries and coils should make spark not magnets and coils makes weak spark. Sorry Noot but I like my one kick and go Ironhead. My Knee still fucking hurts from your Janky bike. Magneto = kicking more.

Also as a later thought the fucking magneto is just as big as my battery and coil set up. So the whole saving space thing is bull. Actually I think a mag hanging off the side of a sweet motor just ruins the look of the motor. So there. If Morris is reading this send me a new one for the shovel and I will give it a go. Ha
