Bad Bearing on 6 Speeds . . .

My friend Bob noticed his 2007 was leaking oil back by the transmission.  It continued leaking and it was coming out more and more all the time . . . He thought it was just a bad seal, but the bearing was missing some balls (actually missing 2 complete ball bearings (he popped out 4 more later) Where did the ball bearings go?
 Bearing (8) and Seal (15)
The bearing race was badly pitted and breaking away . . .
Bearing is H-D Part No. 8967. (FAG Bearing) If your trans starts leaking, you'd better check it out . . . He asked the dealership how many they had changed . . . They said, "A lot ! " . . . it's usually on a motorcycle with about 28,000+ miles . . .

With the rear tire off the ground rotate it by hand. If you hear any "growling" near the front sprocket you better get in there. I've seen them fail before 20K miles.

The problem gets worse with high performance machines also. I had a customer with a hopped up dyna who had two trannys replaced by the stealership before 30K. I put the third one in and told him to use only Lucas 80w90 conventional instead of the synthetic oil. He's now over 70K with no further issues.

Yes, Lucas ! I should have mentioned that....that is a recommended lube for this problem.

Is this only common to 6 speeds? I've got an 01,
5 speed with leak issue that 2 new quad seals don't
seem to correct.

Only 6 speeds - you may have a shaft with some run out? Coming from a crack? Seals in the correct way (spring toward the oil?) Try "The Right Stuff" sealant.

I have the same failure. Not one dealer in South Africa has this bearing in stock.

Does anyone know of an alternative or the FAG number so I can see if I can source it from a local bearing supplier
